theme

Eh... I just wanted to tell everyone that I finished the show theme today. So, this week's show will be the first time it will be aired in the form in which I intended it to be. It won't be really different from what I've been doing for the last month, but I think having that theme is going to make a lot of difference.

I'm not going to reveal any details about it, but I will say that I'm afraid that it will make my show more repelling to potential listeners than it already is.

But it's fucking art! Albeit, found art. But artfully put together, too. ^_^

latest updates

I just want to mention a couple of things...

I was on Cassettefest again this past Wednesday. It was better than last week. No shitty corporate-sounding rock. A couple of noise tapes (including Dexalone Cowboy, mentioned in one of the comments to the last post), a new Brother Mike's Comedy (good, but not his best work), a metal band (ho-hum), and two very amazing tapes. One of them was called "Requiem For Thursday". From the title, it sounds like it might be some sort of emo or something else that sucks, right? Wrong! The meaning of the title became apparent when I recognized the monologue in the first movement. Someone was quoting from one of the fuck-off speeches from the final episode of that certain Thursday morning delight show we all know and have ambivalent attitudes toward (at least I do). After that, it was just some instrumental avant-garde and rock, but still... Amazing that someone would do something like that.

And the other awesome entry? Someone actually sent in an entry that could be categorized as INDIEPOP! I wasn't expecting that at all. It's this band (one-man band, I think) from Columbus called Electric Grandmother. It basically sounded like a cross between a less-intellectual version of They Might Be Giants and some sort of drum machine-driven synthpop. And there was a song about Full House on there. One where Danny Tanner kills everyone at the end. Very cool.

It's disappointing when you go to the site, though. The guy who makes the music is into PUNK. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I guess I'm disappointed because without the "proper" influences, his music could go in some direction in which it shouldn't go. And he seems to consider the end-all and be-all of pop music to be the Ramones. I like the Ramones, but there's been a lot of good [indie]pop music made since they came into being. I'm thinking about trying to send him a mix CD of great indiepop, but I'm not sure if I really should.

When I was in high school, I used to think it was cool to try and be "punk" and call myself a punk. I don't know what's happened since then. I think I'd now feel insulted if someone called me a punk. I just wouldn't want to be lumped in with that subculture. When I think of "punk", I think of people trying almost too hard to be different and rebel against society, and in more than a few cases, getting really drunk and very pierced. Well, I don't drink, and I actually don't like piercings and find them unattractive. Even just ear piercings. On anyone. I don't know why. It's just the way I am. I did think it was really cool in high school to try to be different and rebel against society (very easy to do when you grow up in a conservative small town next to no big cities like I did), but now that I've managed to do so, I don't really care about making a big deal of it. Especially the trying to be different part. Actually, I care more about being cute now. Literally cute. Like Pikachu or Hello Kitty. But it's hard to do because I'm inherently ugly. But that's another rant altogether.

And rebelling against society? Okay, that I can agree with. But I don't want to rebel by being a drunken asshole, or aligning myself with anarchy. I think I'd get my ass kicked in a very bad way if anarchy ever erupts, so I'm not rooting for it. Plus, I think we need some semblance of order to maintain the quality of life we have now. Yes, you hate the traffic lights, but imagine trying to drive through Cleveland during rush hour without them. Actually, that really happened. Remember the big power outage of August 2003? It wasn't fun without those traffic lights, eh? We need some rules and order to function with some degree of productivity and keep ourselves from getting hurt.

But of course, not all punk music is that extreme, not every punk band is about drunkenness or anarchy, and some are more prosocial (like Minor Threat, which I actually like a lot). Okay, but that doesn't compensate for the main reason that I don't like punk, which is that most punk music seems to sound the same to me now. Just hard and fast rocking and difficult to make out the lyrics. And mostly male. Female-fronted punk still sounds quite novel to me. But I have to wonder, too, if people not predisposed to indiepop think that all indiepop sounds the same to them. I'd feel so depressed if someone told me that.

Actually, now that I think about it, there is some generic indiepop out there, but that's not really the kind I love. I think indiepop is at its best when it's at its cutest. Every cute indiepop band seems unique and wonderful to me. And I hope that it's because they are inherently unique and wonderful and superior to all other bands throughout the history of music. Generic indiepop? I can't think of any to name. Because they're generic. :P The only one I can think of now is the Lucksmiths. There are some people who might strongly disagree, but they sound too bland for me, and there are other bands like them, too.

Oh, I'm sorry, this just turned into a whole rant. I was just supposed to talk about Cassettefest there. Let me get back on track...

So... Dora, the DJ who comes on right after the Cassettefest time slot said she was surprised because we were being nice to everything this week. No, we didn't go soft, there were just better entries and no corporate rock. We were mean to one of the noise tapes because it was packaged in a confusing way (long story) and quite boring. But that's it.

The other thing that I wanted to mention was that my mentor, Count Lupone (my mentor because I apprenticed under him when I was starting out on WCSB), asked me to fill in for his show on the 10th and the 17th. Those are Wednesdays/early Thursday mornings from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. I replied in the affirmative because being on during safe harbor (the time when we can broadcast "indecent" material) is exciting. I might have to actually talk on the air when I do it, though. I don't know how I'm going to handle it. But whatever happens, you'll be able to hear some good expletive-laden indiepop those nights.

I'll remind you when it gets closer to the 10th.

Don't forget to listen to Cassettefest every Wednesday from 3 to 5 in the afternoon... Jeff!

the lost scripture of jeff mangum, musical deity

Holy shit! If you have good musical taste, you will go to this page right now, download its entire contents, and burn it to CD. It has Beauty and Hype City Soundtrack in MP3 form. Those are two very rare self-released cassettes from 1992 and 1993, respectively. There are some songs that don't appear on any of the NMH albums, as well as drastically different renditions of ones that do. It's worth your time and blank CDs to get them now!

Yes, I will be playing the fuck out of this stuff next week.

dub narcotic medical fund

A couple of weeks ago, I finally donated to the Dub Narcotic Medical Fund. It's somewhere on the K Records site. Even though it had been quite a while since Calvin Johnson got out of the hospital, I thought that as a dedicated Calvinist, I should donate while I still could.

So, I gave a couple spare bucks.

Strangely, when I filled out the information on the K site, it asked me to choose a rate for delivery. That was weird. I was just donating some money to Dub Narcotic Sound System, not ordering anything. So, I just chose the cheapest option and figured that if they charged me for it, it would be extra money to go to Calvin.

Today, I found out what the delivery option was for. I looked in my mailbox after coming home from the show, and there was an envelope from K Records. In it was a button, and the button said "I [heart] DNSS", and the heart had a white cross in the middle.

Yay!

I just thought that was cute. And now I can be even more of an indie snob Calvinist dickhead and wear the button to show that I gave money to the sacred cause of DNSS.

I think there still might be time for you to go to K Records and donate to them so you could get a button and be a Calvinist snob, too.

Yeah, I know I could be talking about better things right now, like the great thing that the mayor of San Francisco is doing for the nation (Gavin Newsom for president?), but I bet you'd know what I'd have to say about it ("About fucking time someone took a stand and let homosexuals back into the human race!").

Oh, and if anyone wonders what I thought about the Janet Jackson Super Bowl incident, it's very simple... MTV's not going to be doing Super Bowl halftime shows again? Great! They should get back to the greatness of years past when they had the Butt Bowl during halftime! That's when they showed an episode of Beavis and Butt-head during halftime. That beats the hell out of the washed-up corporate popstars they've been throwing at us for the past couple of years.

There.

reflections on today's show (debriefing)

So, what did we learn today? We learned that William Shatner made an Elton John song seem cool. While you might not think of William Shatner as a serious musical vocalist, there just seems to be something extremely cool about the way he just speaks through a song.

The Family Guy episode with Stewie Griffin's tribute to William Shatner's version of "Rocket Man" aired last week, and that's what made me want to play it for this show.

We also learned that the Wannadies are a good band.

What else is there to say?

Well, I delivered on my promise to play J-pop this week. Not a total saturation, but there was a clear J-pop presence. TEEN TITANS!

Teen Titans is an okay show. I don't go out of my way to watch it, but it's interesting to watch. It puts Robin (as in "Batman and Robin") together with a few other teenage superheroes. What's interesting about it is that there's an anime influence to it, even though it's a very American cartoon. The characters have big eyes, and they sometimes do anime sweatdrops and other unique anime expressions of emotion. I guess it makes it cuter than it would normally be. And Puffy AmiYumi doing the theme song just makes it even cooler.

And just in case someone actually did hear both the beginning and end of the show "Freckles" and "Sobukasu" are the same song, but in different languages. That's got to be my favorite anime theme song. It even tops "Cruel Angel's Thesis" from Neon Genesis Evangelion. I love how it starts out with that cheesy metal riff, but then suddenly becomes the cutest, sugary, and most upbeat theme song you've ever heard. I've never heard anything else by Judy & Mary. I wonder if they've done anything else as good as that song.

We got the comments section up to 24 by the end of the show. Nice. ^_^

However, I'm not totally happy because I was hoping that at least one new person would show up to the blog. I really wish that someone else would have realized that they need to see the blog to fully appreciate the show. Maybe the cart doesn't make it clear enough. Maybe I need to make a different one that says "For live playlist updates, go to..." or something like that.

But like I said before, I actually answered a couple of phone calls today. The first time I've picked up the phone since taking this slot. Maybe I'll do it again next week.

Next week, I'll finally play the Casual Dots CD that everyone on WRUW has been playing for weeks. That's the new band with Kathi Wilcox (ex-Bikini Kill), a woman from Slant 6 (can't remember her name), and some other guy I've never heard of before.

Other than that, I'm not really sure what to play.

I think that's all I have to say about the show today.

preshow briefing

You know those carts that I wanted to make? I never did get the chance to make them. You put off things until the weekend, and then look what happens... you get sick! Or I got sick! I got the flu, or something. Something involving me vomiting a few times and my stomach hurting in an agonizing manner.

So, I didn't leave my place at all this weekend. Which was bad because Kiddo played at Pats in the Flats Saturday night. Fuck! They're not going to do another show here for a couple of months. They're going to record their second album soon, and then they're going to tour the Midwest with Australian indiepop band Sekiden. So, I don't get to see them again for a while.

Anyway, the sickness kept me from achieving my goals for the weekend, so I'll try to get the nice carts done next weekend.

The next show I'm going to, though, is on the 5th (of March). It's Volta Sound/The Twilight/Uva Ursi. I'm going for the Twilight and Uva Ursi, but the Volta Sound aren't bad, so maybe I'll stay for the whole thing. That's a Friday night.

Oh, and yes, I did talk on Cassettefest on Wednesday (and I forgot to mention before that Cassettefest is on from 3 to 5 in the afternoon... oops). If I hadn't, then Jasmine would have had to do the end of the show alone because everyone else left by then (deserters!). Only one really indie rock/pop thing (Dead Corporate Eyes) covered last Wednesday, and there was a Malcom Ryder entry (Malcom Ryder is probably a rock subgenre to himself) that referenced the State of Decay show on WRUW. Those were the bright spots. There was an okay '80s rap-influenced thing that was amusing, and the other two things were horrible corporate-sounding rock shit. I was really harsh on the corporate-sounding shit, but can you blame me? Someone had to witness the indie gospel and show the error of the ways of these foul bands!

Anyway, it's almost time for the show, so I'd better get going. Same procedure as before. I'll be updating the set list as the show goes on. Comment on whatever you please. Reload often!

The final reflection on today's show...

Well... I love Harry and the Potters. I thought that the idea of an indiepop band doing nothing but songs about Harry Potter was something too good to be true. Their album sounds like a possible soundtrack to a (good) rock musical about the first four Harry Potter books. I didn't play every single track today, but I went through most of them and spanned all of the first four books. If you want to find out more, go to http://www.eskimolabs.com/hp.

And perhaps you're wondering, "Only two president-related songs, one of which was really about a van known as 'The President'?" Well, there weren't a lot of good president songs I could think of for Presidents' Day. And I didn't really want to have too much of a presidential theme, anyway.

The show is not attracting new listeners. It's either because people were scared away by the two weeks of noise, or they don't understand that they MUST come to this site in order to achieve full enjoyment of the site. Or maybe I just have a bunch of lurkers now.

But I did like how there were a bunch of comments (mostly from me and one listener, but still a bunch) underneath the playlist thread. I like having that sort of public interaction about the show on the Internet, and it's easier to set up the blog comments section than a chat room.

I don't know how soon it'll be before I speak on the air during the show, but I will probably be on Cassettefest this Wednesday. Jasmine probably won't let me disassociate myself from it, and I still think it might be fun to do. Hopefully, there will be more entries that don't suck. I have an idea of a good entry of my own to make, and I hope that I'll be able to put it into being.

When I got back to my place, the UPS truck was there, and it had brought a package with a couple of J-pop CDs I ordered. One was the latest Puffy AmiYumi CD (yes, WRUW has been playing it forever... we just never got it for some reason), and the other was a compilation of different J-pop songs. So, I'll be playing some J-pop next week. If the Harry and the Potters stuff pissed people off this week, I'll be getting death threats on here for next week's show.

But damn it, I did it my way!

Japan has the best corporate pop music, by the way.

Anyway, all that I have to say before finishing this thing is that you should come back at least once before the next show because I'll probably make another post, and I'm going to edit the links section. I'm going to add more links, and I think I might categorize them, too. So, watch for that.

And hopefully, I'll have a proper theme for the show in time for next week. I've meant to have some sort of theme to play at the beginning, but I haven't been able to make it. We'll see if I progress anytime soon.

That's it for now.

Hm... since this is a blog, I suppose that I should do what other people do with their blogs and put my innermost thoughts and feelings, the miniscule details of what I've been doing with my insignificant circle of friends, and my "Which character from Bitchy Prep Teen Movie 2004 are you most like?" quiz results.

Well, not quite. I'll go for some thoughts and feelings, but that's it.

I don't have friends, anyway, and I don't go to see movies as often as I should (and of course, if I went more often, I'd be going to see them at the art movie places like the Cinematheque or the Cedar Lee).

So... It's Valentine's Day. Of course, that makes fodder for a good post. I'm not going to go on an anti-commercialist rant on the whole thing, though. Instead, I'm going to give some love advice.

Here's something that you need to know about love. Perhaps you already know it, but read on in case you don't. Okay, the most important lesson about love is this:

"Don't date outside of your musical genre!"

If you take your music seriously (which you probably do if you're looking at this site), you need to date someone with the same musical taste as you. Rob, the main character of High Fidelity said it best: "It's not what you're like, it's what you like." In other words, you must share a most important common interest. For cool people like us, that would be indiepop (or if you're just experimenting by listening to this show, then fill in your favorite musical genre there).

If you're dating someone who can't stand your type of music, dump that person immediately! Chances are, it's not going to work out. One thing that I learned in collegiate courses is that people get along best with the people who are most like them. This goes for dating. Sure, you might get the occasional odd couple with someone who likes indie rock and someone who likes classical rock (or techno, or something else), but those are exceptions, not the norm. Let's see how long they stay together.

Think about it. Could you really spend your life with someone who has significantly less indie cred than you? Someone who listens to corporate drivel horseshit when they could be listening to high-quality indie goodness. You know, it's quite revolting when someone hears the indie gospel and rejects it. Could you imagine marrying someone who won't let you put on your Sonic Youth or Yo La Tengo records in the house? Fuck no! So, stay away from those types of people.

However, I will admit that "what you're like" also has some weight in the matter. Someone can be indie and an asshole at the same time, or indie and have some other sort of undesirable traits (like he rarely bathes or won't buy you cheap, cheap cake). Still, you can't live on personality and good character traits alone. The type of relationship which someone explains by saying, "Oh, I'm dating Josh just because he's such a nice person." is not going to last long. And dating some hot girl just because she has a nice rack is not going to cut it, either! I'd take a nice indie geek over a supermodel popstar prep bitch any day!

If you prize looks over indieness, your priorities are in the wrong place, and I want you to leave this blog and never come back.

Blessed are those who date the indie geeks within their own particular indie subgenres, for they have found true love.

Here endeth the lesson.

Well...

Anyone looking at this?

Have you been listening for the last couple of weeks?

Did you enjoy the all-noise shows I've been doing for you? It doesn't matter if you did or not. The noise shows were just a stall tactic.

The real shit begins now.

I'm actually going to be updating this blog with the play list while the show is in progress. I'm not sure if I'll do it right after every song or only after each set (when I air PSA's, ID's, etc.). We'll have to see how it goes when the show actually happens. Just check back every once in a while. If you don't see any changes, hit the reload button on your browser.

What am I going to play? Listen and you'll find out. And there will be no requests today, folks.

But in the end, you'll find out that it's better that way.

If you don't like what I have to play, just stay at least 500 feet from this show at all times and pretend it doesn't exist.

This page is powered by Blogger. Isn't yours?
