The part at the beginning where I came on the air really sucked. Partly due to my lack of speed with getting organized and also partly due to a couple of people talking close by while I was on the air.

But everything after that was really good.

Oh, but I did incorrectly refer to The Pharmacy as "Choose Yr Own Adventure". Choose Yr Own Adventure is the name of their album. I didn't know because I hadn't seen their album until right before going on the air, and I pulled it just because it looked good.

And Harley Poe fucking rules!

So, there you go. The end of the 2007 singles countdown. I hope you enjoyed my selection of songs and weren't disappointed by the lack of Animal Collective or LCD Soundsystem.

But yeah, you shouldn't have been surprised by the number one song. I was thinking about having it be what ended up being the number two song, but... that song just resonated with me too much, even though number two also had a lot of significance for me (and the rest of Cleveland) in 2007.

Besides the countdown, I also got to play my "guilty pleasure of the year". My guilty pleasure of the year is the band Say Anything. Say Anything is a very guilty pleasure for me because they're an emo band. A very pretentious emo band. But they're so over-the-top, it's awesome.

I didn't get to tell the whole story on the air about how I got into Say Anything, so I'll tell it to you now...

I was listening to a University of Toledo college radio show, and it played this really catchy almost-electroclash dance song about, well... the chorus of the song went, "I called her on the phone and she touched herself, she touched herself, she touched herself... I laughed myself to sleep." The song was called "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too" and it was about the male singer having an inappropriate relationship over the phone with a minor! But it was so catchy!

The next day, I looked up Say Anything on Wikipedia and found out they were an emo band. "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too" isn't necessarily representative of all their work. But then... I started listening to other songs on the album besides that song. The actual emo songs. And started enjoying them. Because when Say Anything gets emo, they get so pretentious and over-the-top about it, and my repressed inner emo boy squeals with delight when I hear them sing lines like, "There's a man assigned to me, and he checks on my stability. We discuss you every week, then I rinse and rinse, repeat. And he charges by the tear, 'til I weep no more strictly out of fear that I can't afford your love..." (That's from a song called "Total Revenge".)

And that's just stuff from an older album. They released a new album this year, a month or two after I started listening to them, and it's really pretentious, too. In fact, it's a two-disc set about his relationship with a girl and how he has to choose between this girl and his addictions to drugs and ruin. FUCK YEAH!

So, that's how I got into Say Anything...

Anyway, this does it for Boogiepop Does Not Smile. If I get another regular time slot again, I want to do a new show under a different name. Right now, I'm still trying to figure out how to do things differently (and better)...

two-week return engagement...

Because of a serendipitous fill-in opportunity, I have been able to revive Boogiepop Does Not Smile for two weeks in order to have an end-of-year countdown for 2007. You're very fortunate that the guy who does the 9-11 a.m. Tuesday morning slot is on vacation. I really thought I wasn't going to be able to do this, but... Here it is.

I decided to do an even 50 songs for this countdown, and I was able to get through number 24 ("The Past Is a Grotesque Animal" by Of Montreal) before having to quit for the week. We'll have the Top 23 next week (Jan. 8th), and I should have no trouble getting through it all.

So, tune in next Tuesday morning from 9 to 11 to see what got in the Top 23!

One more show left. Even if I do come back on the air later, it might be the last episode of Boogiepop ever. It's just weird because I thought Boogiepop would be more profound... hence the pretentious intro. But no. It stopped being profound after I talked on the air with my own voice instead of using only the computer-synthesized voices to talk. Remember when I only used the computer-synthesized voices exclusively? Yeah.

Right now, I don't know if I can think of anything better with which to replace Boogiepop. Last year, I was thinking about doing a show called "Pop Songs Your New Boyfriend's Too Stupid to Know About", but I thought the idea of naming a college radio show after a song was too cliche.

I don't know. If I can't think of anything better than what I've been doing lately, I probably have no business doing a show again.

I have a big announcement that I didn't make on the air...

I'm going on an indefinite hiatus for personal reasons. My last show will be on the 18th. By "indefinite hiatus", I mean that I won't be doing the show every week, but I won't quit the station and may fill in for other programmers from time-to-time.

Anyway...

I BEG YOU TO GO AND SEE THE HELPER T-CELLS THIS SATURDAY! They're having a CD release show. They're the most underrated band in Cleveland, and the problem is that they're better live than they are on record. And it's hard to promote them on the radio because I'm not allowed to make "qualitative statements" when promoting shows. On here, though... I can say that it's GOING TO KICK ASS! They're going to have an ice cream social at Music Saves at 8 p.m. before the show. That's twee as fuck! And at their last show, they reenacted The State's "$240 Worth of Pudding" skit in the middle of one of their songs. Do you have any idea how awesome that is?!

Oh, and they're also on the latest HHBTM comp. HHBTM is really awesome indiepop label based in Athens, so it's great that the T-Cells have a song on one of their comps.

potterwatch!

Yes... I had a treat for any of you who like wizard rock. Right after my big Harry Potter Book 7 pre-release show, I found out about Potterwatch, and I had to have them (him) on my show.

The guy from Potterwatch (Joshua) is really cool, by the way. As I said right before the end of the show, when he went looking through our CDs, the first one that he happened to pull was the Brak album, which features the song "Magic Toenail". Those of you familiar with my whole radio career know the full significance of that...

So, we got four songs out of him, plus a really eloquent interview. My favorite part was when he talked about how DIY the whole wizard rock scene is. The way he described is enough to give any indie rock true believer goosebumps. I think it's a pretty good argument as to why wizard rock deserves serious appreciation and isn't just a ridiculous joke.

Oh, and his answer to the question of the Harry Potter character that he best identifies with was also a really good one. I appreciate the good natured bit of self-deprecation he tossed in there. ^_^

As for other stuff in the show... There's a new Cars Can Be Blue single called "Doctor" that's really awesome. Also, I played the studio version of "Antediluvian" by Patience Please, which you heard them play live on the show a few weeks ago.

OH NO! I forgot to mention that I'm filling in for Stand Clear of the Closing Doors again this Sunday. That's from noon to 2 p.m. You'll listen, right? Even though I forgot to mention it on the air?

With a band like the Helper T-Cells, it's difficult to promote them on the radio because they're much better live than they are on record.

But then, only one person called in for the tickets to the Au Revoir Simone/Oh No! Oh My! show (at the Beachland on Thursday). What the fuck?! I thought that was going to be a pretty big show. And it probably is going to be a big one. It's just that there's something wrong with my show and that it's unlistenable now.

You know there's something I think that's interesting about sumo wrestling. In the sport of sumo, someone who has achieved the title of yokozuna can't be demoted. It's expected that when a yokozuna's skill has deteriorated that he will have the discretion to step down on his own. Perhaps it's time for me to step down, for my level of skill has clearly deteriorated...

If you download today's show and listen to it, could you please tell me why the show sucked so bad and why only one person called in during the course of two ticket giveaways? Maybe the problem with my show is actually something that I could fix. Is it? Please tell me. I just don't know how to get an audience and hold it anymore.

Oh yeah, I'm going to be doing a fill-in show on Sunday. I'm filling in for Stand Clear of the Closing Doors at noon. I usually don't get up until 2 p.m. on Sundays. So... Good luck to me. Stand Clear of the Closing Doors plays a lot of traditional '80s college rock, so maybe I'll play some of "the classics", as well. Or I could just play exactly what I play on my show. I'm still thinking about it.

I'd also like to mention that I think the Hot Toddies rule. Pika!

Yes... That new EP by the Rentals... it doesn't have enough Moog synthesizer on it. I played a song from that EP this morning, and I was so tempted to just stop it in the middle, but I decided to play the whole song. And then I ended up stopping it on accident because I hit "stop" on the wrong CD player (I was trying to stop a CD player on which I had been previewing a CD)... :P

Anyway, there's some good new stuff on this show, as well as some good old stuff. And some stuff played on vinyl, even though I should be against vinyl after what happened with that R.E.M. record last week.

Oh, I just remembered something semi-important: I may do a fill-in show on Sunday the 19th at noon (in place of Stand Clear of the Closing Doors). If I did it, would any of you listen?

Also semi-important is the fact I will have a couple of ticket giveaways next week. I will be giving away tickets to the Helper T-Cells/Arrah and the Ferns show at the Grog Shop on the 15th, and also the Au Revoir Simone/Oh No! Oh My! show at the Beachland on the 16th.

So... Toledo Indiepop Fest was really awesome, and while I was there, I ended up booking a band to be on my show today. That band was Patience Please from Seattle. They came up today and played six songs, and we also had a little interview. At the bottom of this post, I'll post the links so you can listen.

For anyone who actually likes Wizard Rock, you'll notice that I played a new non-album track by Harry and the Potters near the beginning of the show. If you saw them at the Grog Shop earlier this year, you probably remember that song that they did about bacon, and it sounded like they were making up the song as they went along. Well, surprisingly, they actually recorded it...

Oh, and I didn't get to mention that ShiSho kicked ass in Toledo. They played "Rocks and Penalties" (the psychedelic song about the Smiths reunion) and totally nailed it. Awesome! Plus, they were both wearing Harry and the Potters shirts...

Finally, Ladybug Transistor, Red Pony Clock, and the Afternoon Naps are all playing tonight at the Grog Shop. You should go. It's going to be great...

"radical" is my word!

Since nobody said that they liked the Harry Potter set last week, I decided to see if I could win acclaim by doing a set dedicated to another giant media phenomenon, namely, The Simpsons. Since the Simpsons movie is coming out this week, I decided to pull out the punk rock Simpsons compilation that I listened to a lot in high school and play most of the good songs from it. That set rocked disturbingly hard for a Boogiepop show. I hope it didn't lose fans for me again like the Harry Potter set probably did.

Actually, no one said they particularly liked the Simpsons punk rock set, either. I just don't know anymore...

So, this is going to be an awesome week. Harry and the Potters are playing with Draco and the Malfoys and the Whomping Willows at the Lakeshore Facility of the Cleveland Public Library tomorrow night (Wednesday the 25th) at 6:30 p.m. That's going to be awesome.

And then Toledo Indiepop Fest is happening on Friday and Saturday. I just booked my hotel room. Yay!

And in case you didn't see my last post yet, the Helper T-Cells, who were to gloriously represent Cleveland on Saturday night, pulled out. That's too bad. I'm sure they would have won a lot of new fans in Toledo.

However, they've been replaced with ShiSho! Woo hoo! I get to see them live without having to go to Columbus! (Still, they should play a Cleveland show.)

So, this is pretty much going to be the climax of the summer. This coupled with the Harry Potter book release last Friday. Like I said, I did go to a midnight release. I went to the one at Mac's in Coventry. They were having a bunch of things going on up and down Coventry, so I decided to go and support an indie bookstore.

I just found out that the Helper T-Cells have pulled out of the Toledo Indiepop Fest. That's too bad. However, they've been replaced by ShiSho! Yay! I've never seen ShiSho live, so that makes the Toledo Indiepop Fest even more exciting.

The Toledo Indiepop Fest site/Myspace page doesn't reflect that change, but I got this information from an e-mail straight from ShiSho, so it must be correct.

It's yet another act of self-sabotage that you've come to expect from "the Brian Jonestown Massacre of college radio".

And yes, there is a shitload of bands who do songs about Harry Potter.

Oh... but I will probably play some Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, and Whomping Willows again next week. They're all playing at the Lakeshore facility of the Cleveland Public Library on Wednesday the 25th.

But besides that, I'll be playing a bunch of bands that are playing at the Toledo Indiepop Fest. That's going to be happening on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th. Bears, the Afternoon Naps, and the Helper T-Cells will all be there to represent for Cleveland. Yay! (Kiddo will also be there, if you still count them as a Cleveland band at all.)

The Afternoon Naps album is done! So, now you can hear "Bun Bun" with the same epic trumpet part that they do at their live shows! And you can hear other songs that you've never heard outside of one of their shows.

The physical CD version of the album isn't out yet, but you can buy/sample MP3s at the Afternoon Naps Myspace site.

And of course, I actually bought all the songs before the show, even though they probably would have given me the CD for free (no, I'm not like Evan Dando... I don't get all my records for free, just the Afternoon Naps' stuff). I had to get the whole thing right now!

And what else did I play on my show?

Well, I did a brief block of songs in Spanish because there was a listener from Spain on the Internet. And then the listener from Spain betrayed me by leaving right before I announced the songs from that set! That made me quite sad.

Oh, and if you download the second part of the show, I should tell you that I started recording it halfway through my mic break at the top of the 10:00 hour. I missed the part during which I said that perhaps Boyracer's version of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" wasn't really the greatest song in the world. I suspect that it may really be "Oh, Comely" by Neutral Milk Hotel. The part at the end of the song with the Siamese twins freezing to death is incredible... "Goldline my dear, we will fold and freeze together. Far away from here, there is sun and spring and green forever, but now we move to feel for ourselves in some stranger's stomach. Place your body here, let your skin begin to blend with mine." Holy shit!

(If you listen closely at the end of "Oh, Comely", there's someone who yells "Holy shit!" at the end of the song. The story behind that song is that Jeff Mangum recorded the singing and guitar in one take. Originally, he was just going to run through a verse or two to test the placement of the mics, but instead, he just went through the song and gave what could be the performance of his life. And one of his bandmates who was listening in the other room was so moved that he just yelled "Holy shit!" at the end.)

You know how it seems like with a lot of people that they stop seeking out new music at some point in their lives? Like they'll just keep listening to whatever was popular when they were a teenager or when they were in their mid-20s? I think Neutral Milk Hotel has brought me to a point like that, in which I feel that it's unnecessary to listen to anything new.

But then again, I want somebody to try to top Aeroplane. Or at least match it. DON'T SAY THAT YOU CAN'T DO IT! TRY! JUST FUCKING TRY! TAKE YOUR FUCKING METAPHYSICAL WORLDVIEW AND MAKE AN EPIC OUT OF IT! We'll never advance human civilization beyond the astounding achievement that is Aeroplane if you just give up like that and don't even try to aim high!

(And that's an open plea to anyone who comes across this page. Anyone. Please give me a reason to think that there isn't anywhere else to go but down.)

hey, happy 4th of july... let's blow something up!

Let's see... I started off with a 4th of July set. Then, went into a block of Smiths/Morrissey, a couple of Tetris-related tracks, and someone wanted to hear two Calvin Johnson songs back-to-back. Oh, and the last set of the show was really mellow. Maybe too mellow. But it had a new Mirah song in it. That was the show...

I hope the Smiths/Morrissey thing wasn't too much. Maybe that was a bad idea. But I felt like playing them because they were the last thing I listened to before I left for the station. And the live version of "Bigmouth Strikes Again" was really good because it didn't have those high-pitched vocals on it.

Oh, and I think the guy who wanted to hear the back-to-back Calvin Johnson was
different from whoever requested that entire set of Calvin Johnson a few weeks ago. That's amazing to hear that there are Calvinists popping up in Cleveland. You can't get too much of The Calvin.

Finally, I didn't mention it on the air, but WCSB won that kickball game. Actually, we ended up playing 2 games and won both.

You know there in Washington, they got a monument covered with names. Names of folks they say gave their lives for their country. And we oughta honor them. The way I see it, they were just doing what they were told.

Now, who I'd like to bestow my gratitude on is them free thinking folks of independent mind. I'd like to say thank you to all of you Vietnam era draft dodgers. And thank you to all you Gulf War military deserters. And I just want to give a big thanks to all of those Americans out there who put their freedom on the line as conscientious objectors and military resistors.

All of you youngsters out there, all of you young men ages 18-22, you're probably wondering what you can do to follow in the footsteps of the American way and assert yourselves as mature individuals. You can decide your own future. I'm not gonna suggest you shouldn't register for the draft. That wouldn't be legal.

But why not take a cue from my buddy Sam? 12 CDs for the price of 1. And register 10 times, 50 times, 100 times. There's no law against it. No law against a woman 18-22 registering 50 or 60 times. Or a man, or a woman 14 or 40 registering for the draft 150 times, 500 times. Just let them know what's on your mind.

About all the bugaboo concerning folks burning the flag. I'd always learned that burning was the proper, respectful way to dispose of a flag when it's become obsolete and worn out its usefulness. Hell, being an American is all about getting things off of your chest and saying your piece. A visual aid can come in mighty handy for getting your point across.

Eek! I forgot to mention on the air today that the big WCSB/WRUW kickball game is this Sunday. It's 1 p.m. at Clark Field in Tremont. Check the WCSB forum for more details as they come available. (And no, I don't know if anyone will be wearing a slug suit and acting as our mascot. WCSB industrial music personality Feima has offered to do so, but I don't know if she really is going to do that.)

Anyway, about the show today... I really like Neutral Milk Hotel. Yeah. And sometimes I really do think that Neutral Milk Hotel is the greatest thing ever and that anything that I do in life is unnecessary because it just won't be as good as their masterpiece album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Can anything get better than that?

So, yeah, I ended up doing an embarrassingly obsessive rant about how Neutral Milk Hotel is the greatest achievement of all humanity.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

If you listen to Boogiepop live on the Internet every Tuesday morning (on the livestream at WCSB.org, please note that you will not hear my show (or any other normal WCSB programming) on the livestream tomorrow (June 26th). This is due to WCSB's participation in a "Day of Silence" for Internet broadcasters in order to protest an impending increase in royalty rates for Internet broadcasting. This increase will force many Internet broadcasters (and maybe WCSB) to shut down.

pancakes! yum, yum!

Every once in a while, I'll try to go on YouTube to look for stuff. So, today, I tried typing in "the pancakes" (The Pancakes are my favorite pop band from Hong Kong... and all of China, really) and Pancakes-related stuff came up! Yay!

Remember that one Pancakes song, "Etienne", which I played every so often. I found a live performance of it. The lyrics are all sung in Chinese, though, and Dejay doesn't seem to sing the name "Etienne" at any point. But I know the tune, so I'm sure it's that song.

And here's a live video of "Rock Guitar". It's not the whole song, but it's 2 minutes long, and it's in English. Yay!

And here's a girl from America doing a cover of the Pancakes' song "Martin". Cute!

Hm... I think the show is better with Leia there. She kept me more focused and the show seemed more fun.

Although, part of the reason why today's show seemed weird and crazy to me was that I had a bad case of insomnia last night and got maybe 30 minutes of sleep. Eek! :(

Lack of sleep makes the world (I mean, the world as I perceive it) turn surreal, as well as daunting, so if the show was really weird and fucked up to you, that's why.

Oh, and the 2-week reporting period for SoundExchange just began, so I had to do 2 separate playlists during the show (the one in this blog and the one for SoundExchange). That complicates things somewhat.

But you know what was good about the show? I went through with the set of all Calvin Johnson, even though I had no idea if the guy who originally requested it two weeks ago was listening or not. And it was awesome! Loads of dreamy, sexy, deep-voiced Calvin goodness. That was great!

And I also liked how I did the first set of the show, with the Harry Potter songs the seamlessly segued with the ice cream songs after it.

But the parts where I talked on the air weren't so good. And no one took my hint during the second hour and called to ask me out on a date. No one, male or female. So, I guess maybe single twee boys also exist only in fairy tales or in Athens, Georgia. ^_^ (Just kidding of course.)

And no, I'm kidding about expecting listeners to call in to ask me out on a date. But that would have been funny if someone did. And then they'd be all disappointed because I'd have to tell them that they're going to have to pay for the date because I spent all my disposable income on music to play on the show. ^_^

So, next week, I have Helper T-Cells tickets to give away. They're playing on the 28th (that's a Thursday night) at the Beachland. You should call in and get the tickets. You'd really love them if you went. They're a better live band than they are on record because they do lots of fun skits and stuff at their shows. And one time, they did a perfect rendition of the theme from Ren and Stimpy. Awesome!

And then July is going to be big because Mirah, They Might Be Giants, and Harry and the Potters (along with Draco and the Malfoys and the Whomping Willows) will be playing in Cleveland. Actually, those shows are all happening within a week from each other. And I already have reserved a pair of tickets to give away for the Mirah show. Yay! And I'm trying to get TMBG, too. (And I think the HatP show is free.)

And in the space of that same week, the Toledo Indiepop Fest is happening, too!

Oh, and in August, there's going to be an awesome show at the Beachland with Au Revoir Simone and Oh No! Oh My!. I forgot to mention that on the air today.

Leia is teh awesomeness!

And yes, Ben, she is teh cuteness, as well. Like when we were talking on the air in the middle of the second hour. That part was so cute! "A+!"

You have to download the second hour and listen to it if you don't know what "A+!" is in reference to. That was one of the greatest radio moments ever.

And I hope you weren't annoying by Leia's children's records. I just couldn't resist.

I don't know how often I'll keep having her on because it would be awkward to play the Afternoon Naps while she's co-hosting the show. I don't want it to seem like she's there to promote her own band, which she has definitely not been doing these last couple of weeks. She's been here to force me to do my show because it's the only thing that brings her overwhelming joy in her otherwise mundane life (well... the only thing besides her successful music career and tons of friends that she has).

In other news, I'm still deciding on whether or not I'm going to that anime convention in Independence to see Entertainment System at ColossalCon in Independence this Friday. ColossalCon is this anime/video game convention with lots of hardcore otakus, and I'm just not cool enough to hang around with them. Plus, it costs $25 just to go on Friday, and I don't know if I want to pay $25 just to see Entertainment System. But they are pretty awesome...

I should also mention that I managed to play Ed in the Refridgerators without mentioning that one of the members of that band is Joe DeGeorge from Harry and the Potters...

i'm going on a bear hunt...

So... for right now, at least, I'm not quitting.

But I'm clearly not feeling this whole thing as much as I used to.

If Leia hadn't forced me to come up and do the show (as well as help me do the show), this probably would have just been my last show ever. Seriously. This whole thing isn't a weird publicity stunt, and it's not an artistic plotline, or whatever. Boogiepop is supposed to be just me playing records and talking straightforwardly. And it is. So, if I say that I'm unhappy or thinking about quitting the show, I mean it.

But yeah, thanks to Leia for getting up early just to come up and play records with me.

Oh, and since this show doesn't have its own wiki, I'll just have to clarify a couple parts of today's episode here...

For those who haven't been avid WCSB listeners for the past decade or so, "Chris and Thea" were hosts of a talk show called "Assholier Than Thou" (yes, they actually got away with giving their show that title). They talked a lot about their lives, pop culture, and the unique sort of issues that thirtysomethings face. It sounded weird and not instantly accessible to people at first, but its greatness became apparent to people upon repeated listenings.

Anyway, talking to Leia on the air reminded me of that show.

Second, I played that Star Wars thing at the end of the show just because Leia happened to find it in the big spindle of CDs that she brought up to the show. She didn't realize she had it in that spindle, and when she did, she was like, "You have to play this!" because she hadn't heard it in a while. And since this is WCSB, and we often like to be weird and random on WCSB, I did play it. And on that track, a 17-year-old version of Leia was playing the piccolo. Which is an instrument that apparently sounds like a guinea pig.

So... tune in next week, to see if I get my groove back, or something. To see if my youthful enthusiasm returns. Or I at least get just enough resolve to go through the motions again without any help.

Yes, I will do one more show.

Just to clarify things... This isn't about one bad show. This is about one bad show on top of a bunch of misgivings that were already there--and have been there since I came back on the air last summer. I just haven't been quite sure and comfortable with the idea of continuing to do a show.

I had a nice run. But I got my Master's last year, and I'm not going back to school. Maybe it's time for me to give it up for the next generation. I decided a long time ago that I wouldn't be a "lifer". (Not that I have anything against anyone who might actually be a "lifer", I just don't think it's right for me.)

Anyway, that's all that I have to say for now. I'm sure I will have more to say later.

short statement on today's show

In the middle of today's show, I decided on-air to quit after this week. Perhaps it seemed random and unexpected, but I've considered quitting for personal reasons ever since I came back on the station last summer. The technical mishaps and poor quality of today's show were just the last straw.

I don't know.

It would be a shame for me to go out on such a bad note. Maybe I will try to do one more good show next week. I will have to go do some soul-searching now.

I apologize for all this craziness, and I appreciate your patience and understanding.

Perhaps I may explain more later, but feel free to post comments in the meantime.

So, today I had an all-request show, and people kept making requests until the end of the show! Yay!

Why did I do it today? I don't know, I just wanted to see if I could actually do one. And I did!

I'm sorry that I had to make it happen by deliberately sabotaging my show (by playing the greatest song in the world at the very beginning of the show, ensuring that the show would go downhill unless I had outside intervention), but that was really awesome. Thanks to everyone who made requests!

Big Kiddo CD release show on Saturday! YAAAYYYYY!!! But I'm going to have to miss Daniel Johnston for it. Awwwww!!! :(

I just saw The Devil and Daniel Johnston for the first time this past weekend. It's really incredible, and now I understand why everyone involved in the indie scene in Texas reveres Daniel Johnston as a god...

"Do you really love me?" Yes, I do, Daniel!

By the way, sorry about the confusing way in which I tried to say that "Do You Really Love Me?" and "Tell Me Now" are the same song. You'll hear what I'm referring to when you download the show.

You'll also get to hear one of the most amazing songs ever: Boyracer's cover of "Total Eclipse of the Heart". It may end up being the number one single of the year. Yes, it might actually beat out "Hands Up Baby" by Camera Obscura, or "Anatomy of the Animal's Attitude" by the Hat Company, or even "Bun Bun" by the Afternoon Naps.

And during the show, I found an entry for "shisho" on urbandictionary.com. And I just noticed that it was submitted by people from California. The band, ShiSho, is from Columbus, so they may have had nothing to do with submitting that entry. Which would be amazing because the Urban Dictionary definition perfectly describes the band.

I just realized that I forgot that May 4th is on Friday and I didn't play the Dandy Warhols' version of "Ohio".

But yeah, it was a pretty good show, anyway. Even though I said some crazy/weird things on the air during the second hour.

But people listened. Yay! And people actually called in for the Casper/Icicles/Afternoon Naps tickets! Double yay!

So, maybe I'll see you at that show tomorrow night, eh?

And next week, I'll have tickets to the Kiddo CD release show. It's a good CD, too! And like I said, if you can't wait, it's already been on iTunes for quite a while.

I have to apologize for the MP3s that I'm about to post. The show is going to be incomplete this week because I forgot to change CDs at the top of the 10:00 hour. The first MP3 ends in the middle of Jens Lekman and the second MP3 ends in the middle of Trembling Blue Stars.

I blame it on going to the Casper and the Cookies/Icicles/Hat Company show in Toledo last night. Maybe that wasn't the best idea, since Casper and the Icicles are both coming to play in Cleveland on May 2nd (with the Afternoon Naps!). But I couldn't wait to see the Icicles! And I had to see the Hat Company.

Anyway, if you listen to the MP3s, you'll still get to hear the awesome Hat Company songs, as well as Camera Obscura's ABBA cover. And a Celtic-style remix (!) of the Blow.

Speaking of the Blow, one part of the show that didn't get recorded was when I announced that their May 21st show at the Grog Shop got cancelled. They were playing a few dates with Electrelane, and Electrelane was headlining. But then Electrelane got picked up to tour with the Arcade Fire. So, instead of just letting the Blow headline or whatever, they cancelled the Cleveland show (along with a few other tour dates). Even though Electrelane is overrated, and the real reason to go to that show was to see the Blow. And Tender Forever (who was also opening). ARGH!

Does anyone know anyone powerful in the Cleveland indie scene who might be able to get the Blow to come and play anyway? Anyone? Help! Please! My dreams are crushed because I wanted to see the Blow at least once before I die.

Anyway, tune in next week. I'll have a ticket giveaway for the Casper and the Cookies/Icicles/Afternoon Naps show at the Beachland on the 2nd.

I'm like the Brian Jonestown Massacre of college radio.

If you watch the movie, Dig!, you see how Anton Newcombe (BJM's frontman) fouls up every chance at success that BJM has. Onstage at South-by-Southwest, a BJM show erupts in a fight between the band members. At a solo acoustic show, he gets arrested for kicking an audience member in the head.

So it goes with me. I foul up every chance I have at success, too. I think it has something to do with me being part emo, and therefore having ovaries (according to the The Emo Game, all emo boys have ovaries), which keep me from getting too successful so that my indie integrity will be maintained at all times. That's why I quit doing Sergio Van Lukenstein in its prime. And today is another example.

WRUW was off the air. I think I may have gotten more listeners than usual because of that. (On a side note, I do not rejoice in WRUW's pain. This is especially bad for them now because they're in the middle of their telethon, which is their big annual fundraiser. You might consider going to their website and looking for information about how to donate to them.)

Anyway, I think I might have had more listeners than usual, and what happens? I end up doing one of the most astonishingly fucked up segments ever. The segment? It was a mic break that turned into a guest spot by Felipe from Songs of an Ex-Pat (which is another show on WCSB). We ended up talking for 20 minutes, singing the Zelda theme song, doing Pokemon impressions, and talking about video games. It probably baffled the hell out of most of the audience. (For some reason, I think that most of the Cleveland college radio audience doesn't play video games.)

And you know what? It was fucking glorious! It was my best radio moment ever! But it probably freaked people out because they had no idea what was going on. You have to hear it...

Oh, and I felt the second hour of the show after that was substandard. I ended up taking a lot of calls (usually I get maybe 2 or 3 per show if I'm lucky), and when you're like me and don't set your playlist in stone before the show, it's more difficult to do a show when you're on the phone much of the time and don't have time to preview and choose selections. (I still haven't gotten a chance to hear any of the bonus remixes on the new Blow reissue, by the way.) So, yeah, I don't think my music programming abilities were at full capacity.

So, I've managed to alienate the audience yet again.

And I say sincerely and unsarcastically: Good.

The integrity of my show is preserved and I will not be spoiled by success.

I'll be with you again next week, true believers. Everyone else... I hope I provided you with at least some amusement for this week at least.

sims 2: a theodicy adventure

I just got the Sims 2 "Seasons" expansion pack, and so I played some Sims 2 this weekend. And then I got to thinking about the basic tenets of Christianity again, since Easter is this Sunday. And the combination of circumstances inspired a whole mindset of enlightenment concerning the problem of theodicy...

It scares the shit out of me whenever I think about what I've done while playing the Sims, and how I've treated and felt towards my Sims. Eek...

If you don't usually download the shows, you'll definitely want to download this one. In the first part of the show, you'll hear my inspired St. Patrick's set, featuring Negativland and Henry Rollins. Two things you don't hear me play often. And in the second part, you'll hear Cleveland's newest indiepop sensation, the Afternoon Naps!

I wish I could have done a good interview with them, though. They didn't get here as soon as I wanted them to, so I couldn't talk about Leia's obsessions with the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players and Sifl and Olly. And that's not something you can dwell on in a short amount of time. And I didn't get to find out what Tom was obsessed with, either.

But anyway, you'll definitely want to download this. And you may want to go to see the Afternoon Naps play live at the Beachland tomorrow night (Wednesday, the 14th) when they open for Dean and Britta. You may want to see Dean and Britta.

Anyway, that latest show was pretty good, but next week is going to be really big.

First of all, I'll have a ticket giveaway for the Of Montreal show at the Beachland on the 19th.

Then, I might be having a band come up to play. They're a very important new local band called the Afternoon Naps. They don't have an album out, but they do have a Myspace. They'll be promoting the fact that they're opening for Dean and Britta (ex-Luna) at the Beachland on the 14th and (more importantly) will be playing some songs for you.

You know that every time I find a local band that I like, they're really awesome, so you know you're going to have to pay special attention to this next show. Because I'm recognized throughout the Cleveland music scene as a hip, influential tastemaker.

Not. :P

But you know I should be recognized as one, so this is going to be really good. If the 'Naps show up. And one of the members of the band swears that she is going to show up whether she has to do it alone or not.

We'll see. Exciting stuff!

But for now, let us reflect upon the small slice of awesomeness that was this week's show.

Except for the fact that I didn't know Maria Taylor (ex-Azure Ray) released a new album. Damn! I could have downloaded it and played it! Oh well...

i finally saw the writing on the letter and it said... I'M A WIZARD!

If you haven't heard yet (and if you did hear my show, you definitely have heard), Harry and the Potters are playing at the Grog Shop this Sunday (the 4th). It's an early show (5 p.m.), and it's all ages. HATP shows are always a big event, and they put on a really good show. It's like Harry Potter meets Tenacious D. If you like Harry Potter, you have to go.

Anyway, if you heard my show today, you probably heard me make reference to an Of Montreal show in Las Vegas and certain pictures of (Of Montreal's lead singer) Kevin Barnes. For those who don't check Pitchfork every day, the big deal is that Of Montreal played 6 songs while Kevin was wearing nothing but a red sash and fishnet stockings. And yes, you could see (as Monty Python would say) Kevin's naughty bits. And those pictures were big news on Pitchfork.

I don't know what exactly to think about it. It's not very twee, but then again, Of Montreal's material has been getting darker and weirder as of late. And you know what else? Those pictures are hot!

And one more thing before I post the show... I was the first to play songs from the new Arcade Fire album on WCSB. I started off the show with two songs from the album... but people seemed to care more about the Ivy League's cover of "Crown of Love" more than those songs. Uh oh! Looks like Arcade Fire fell victim to the sophomore slump.

Oh, and if you heard the show already, maybe you're wondering what's up with me asking people to request their favorite Mirah song. Well, I usually don't get a lot of requests (except I did get a lot on last week's Valentine's show, which was awesome), so I was just making a suggestion for something good that people could call in to request. I'm surprised it took until the end of the show for someone to call in with a Mirah song.

Honestly, it's the ultimate compliment for someone to request something that I'd play on my show. It shows that people are paying attention.

And you know what? I could keep posting MP3s no matter what happens with the SoundExchange live webstream bullshit, but if that goes through, the stakes are higher if the music industry has a cow about what I'm doing.

If you would like more information about how the music industry is trying to shut down our webstream because they hate independent radio, last week's issue of the Free Times had an excellent story about it. You can read that story here. Also, for details about what you can do to help save our stream, you can go to the WCSB website for suggestions about writing your politicians.

As for good news, next week is going to be the non-ironic Valentine's Day show. If you can get away with it, stay home with your significant other and curl up together for the mushiest show of the year! PIKA!!! I've already compiled a big list of songs that I could play (and some of it includes new stuff), so I know it's going to be great. Although, if you do know of any indie/twee pop love songs that I should definitely play, post it in the comments link below.

For now, in case you didn't hear the show live, I'm trying to take suggestions on what kind of animal mascot WCSB should have.

What brought that up was the Helper T-Cells' performance on WRUW's Live From Cleveland last Thursday. While they were on there, they had a friend pretend to be a WRUW DJ and say, "You're listening to WRUW 91.1, the home of the Beagle!" And that made me wonder... What kind of animal mascot would WCSB have if it did have a mascot?

I didn't give my own idea for a mascot on the air, but I guess I'll give it to you now. My idea was the sloth. Because WCSB is working class and somewhat lazy. Then again, the sloth might be too cute to be working class.

I'm sorry that I couldn't get the show up or even the last two items on the playlist up immediately after the show. Blogger went down for some sort of maintenance. So, I couldn't post until now.

Anyway, during this show, I revealed my picks for the most disappointing releases of 2006, as well as the best reissues of 2006.

For those who missed it, the two most disappointing releases were:

/begin pretentious music critic mode

1. Pony Up! Make Love to the Judges With Your Eyes

I met them when they played in Cleveland in 2005. They were very nice, but it pains me to say that when I heard them say that the chick who wrote "I Heard You Got Action" (the "Let's talk baseball" song) wasn't in the band anymore, I had a bad feeling. And it was confirmed with the release of this album. I guess that with that songwriter (sorry, I don't know her name), they lost their sense of humor. The album is just overly serious, with a pretentious title as icing on the cake.

2. Rose Melberg Cast Away the Clouds

I should be electrocuted and spanked at the same time for this because I'm basically agreeing with Pitchfork's review of this album. But it states my sentiments quite well. Cast Away the Clouds just isn't as cute as her first solo album, Portola. Plus, most of the songs are slow and mellow, and just sound like average, kind of overproduced singer-songwriter fare. I admit that if you do listen closely, the lyrics do actually sound kind of cute, but still... it needed a few upbeat songs.

And then, the best reissues were:

1. Various Artists Double Agent 1980: a tribute to the 1980's

This is an iTunes-only reissue, but they at least got it out there for those of us who were out of the loop in the '90s when this was released. This has several indiepop bands doing covers of '80s songs, with highlights including the Softies doing Rick Astley's "Together Forever" and Tullycraft doing "Hold Me Now" by the Thompson Twins.

2. Sonic Youth Sonic Youth

Their debut EP. It's hard to believe that they didn't reissue it before last year. Being at WCSB, I was fortunate to be able to listen to the original vinyl version before last year. There are a couple of important songs on there ("Burning Spear" and "I Dreamed I Dream"), so it's about time.

And so, I did manage to get all 59 songs of the 2006 year-in-review countdown played within two weeks. If you didn't hear the show live and you want to listen to the MP3s, I recommend that you don't look at the playlist (in the post below this one) so you avoid seeing any spoilers.

Next week, we'll be going back to mostly regular programming, except I'm also going to honor the two best reissues of 2006, and also play some of the disappointing releases of 2006.

I've also got some great new stuff to play. Like the Zambonis/Harry and the Potters split 7". And the new Sloan CD. And the new Of Montreal 7". And the Awesome Animal Ambulance album that was released in 2005, but I didn't find out about until last month. In case you didn't hear before, I have an important announcement.

I will be on WCSB from midnight to 2 a.m. on January 1st (Sunday night/early Monday morning). So, I'm going to be doing WCSB first broadcast of 2007. Neato!

Usually, that time slot is occupied by Scruggscorp/Crap as hosted by Keith. Even though Keith will be far away in New York (no, he's not going to Times Square), I'll still be keeping his (mostly) talk format and taking callers on the air. It'll probably be New Year's related topics (reflections on 2006, resolutions and hopes for 2007, etc), plus any random topics that might pop up.

So, tune in to WCSB and stay awake for a couple more hours after you toast the new year... or just turn your radio to WCSB while you're in bed and falling asleep and listen to the rare phenomenon that is a Boogiepop-hosted talk show.

Anyway... Next week, I have 33 songs to get through. Can I get through them all? I don't know. It's going to be exciting. And it'll be exciting to see who number 1 is. ^_^

Once again, Happy Hanukkah. And Happy Solstice and Merry Christmas to whomever it's applicable.

Thus ends the holiday season on Boogiepop Does Not Smile. I hope you enjoyed it, but I can't help but feeling disappointed in myself. See, I didn't get to play everything I could have played. Like "Bethlehem" by Duplex. Or the newer Shonen Knife Christmas song (with lyrics by Thurston Moore). Or especially one of the Of Montreal Christmas songs. I can't believe I didn't play anything by Of Montreal.

I should have just did three full weeks of holiday music. :P

But that's all over with now, and it's time to look forward. Or backward. Because it's time for the 2006 No Money Mark Memorial Year-In-Review Countdown! Starting next week, I'll be spending 2 weeks counting down the best singles of the year. No mediocrity here! It's all going to be good stuff. And because I wasn't on the radio for a few months this year, there's going to be some surprises popping up (because I didn't get to play them when they were new).

hanukkah snowman

I was wrong about not having a new Hanukkah song for this year. Phranc (my favorite Jewish lesbian folksinger... unless Mirah counts as a folksinger) does a song called "Hanukkah Snowman" on the new Kill Rock Stars Winter Holiday Album. It's nice and cute. And there's also a really good solo song by Beth Ditto (from the Gossip). It's weird to hear her backed up by brass horns and jingle bells, though.

Anyway, I've decided that I'm going to play some holiday stuff next week. And it's just going to be new songs that I acquired this year. So, even if you're not up to listening to it yet, there will at least be some novelty to it thanks to all the newness. And I'll make sure to play that song with Rose Melberg on it.

Finally, I'm thinking about making a new Boogiepop Does Not Smile MySpace page. But I'm not sure if I should bother...

Well, there are three more episodes of Boogiepop before Christmas. In case you didn't catch it, I was asking if I should play any holiday (Christmas and Hanukkah) music next week. Most people said either play none or just a few songs. I'm not sure how much holiday content I'll put into the show, but it won't be a full holiday episode.

I do have some new Christmas stuff that I got this year. Like the Harry and the Potters Christmas CD. (Yes, they have a Christmas CD.) And a Christmas single by the Bright Ideas with guest vocals from Rose Melberg. And some stuff by Saturday Looks Good to Me.

I don't have any new Hanukkah stuff, though. They still haven't come out with the sequel to the Little Shirley Beans Hanukkah comp yet.

i guess i'm a camwhore now

WCSB has a webcam now. But it's not like you can just go to a site and see it 24/7. We have to turn it on by going to a certain site called voiceandvideochat.com and enable people to see it. And if listeners want to see the cam, they have to go to that site, too.

But only certain show hosts will use the webcam. Understandably, a number of DJs object because of privacy issues. But I can tell you that Keith from Scruggscorp/Crap is very cool with the webcam and always uses it. He's on from midnight to 2 a.m. Sunday night (Monday morning).

Anyway, I used the webcam today, but I didn't do anything interesting. I just tried not to pick my nose. That's all.
