living in a post-69 love songs vol. 1 world

I'm tired and I don't really have anything interesting to say right now.

I guess it's time to give you two weeks notice before the Valentine's Day show (it'll be on the 13th). That's the one where I play all the mushy love songs. Sweetest Day is the one where I play all the breakup songs.

So, if you have a cute love song that you want to hear on the 13th, post it on one of the comments links.

Here's the show, with an extra 30 minutes of college radio-y goodness:

1/30/06 Part 1
1/30/06 Part 2

Edit: Links were broken. Once again, I'm indebted to Kevin for pointing them out to me. I just forgot a couple of letters in the filenames.

Edit: I forgot to mention in this post that the show is starting at 8:30 next week, instead of the usual 9 a.m. starting time. Bart has to leave a half an hour early. Any suggestions on what I should do with the additional half hour?

fitzgerald has got the straightedge

I feel stupid for not figuring out that "Bloody Stumps" is an anti-smoking song and not just a song about amputation. Elizabeth is a genius just for figuring that out.

I hate to do this, but I have to ask one more time if people are downloading the shows on here and if y'all think I should keep putting my shows on the site. The reason for this is that it's been almost a year since I started doing this, so it's almost time to re-register the boogiepopdoesnotsmile.com domain name? So, I'm going to ask again for all the people who download the show to post a comment below and represent.

I forgot to play the Advantage's Ducktails [sic] track. Whoops! I'll try again next week.

Here's another stab at MySpace whoring... Add me as your friend on MySpace and instantly qudruple your indie cred! My MySpace URL is http://www.myspace.com/boogiepopdoesnotsmile.

Finally, I'll tell you more about the transmitter difficulties when we figure out what's wrong and how to get it fixed.

so, what's the radio equivalent of a "hallraker"?

So, yeah, the big story today was how a lot of the Internet audience dropped off when I played the Minibosses doing "Super Mario Bros. 2". I was surprised. I thought everyone played that game. And how could anyone not love the part where they do the cave theme. The drumwork on that part is just so amazing!

And then, near the end of the show, I played some stuff by the Advantage (the other big video game cover band--we just got their CD at the station) and ended with the Minibosses doing "Punch Out".

Here are the links so you can listen to all the drama for yourself:

Also, you can still listen to the whole 2005 singles countdown. The links are in the post below today's playlist.

the not-so final countdown

Okay, since a couple more people have shown interest (and I'll assume there are at least a couple of others who either ambivalent or have just been silent about it for whatever reason), I've done that recreation of the missing part of the first part of the 2005 countdown which I was offering to do. I don't talk on it, but you do get the robot voice announcing the songs.

By the way, I didn't put Sleater-Kinney (#29) on there, so you're still missing the first part of that song. Oh well, it's Sleater-Kinney, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting that song if you really want it.

Anyway, here are all the links for the countdown shows:

"uh uh uh oh"--the most astute words of wisdom uttered in 2005

Right after the show today, Elizabeth (from Cool Chick #59, one of the other shows on this station) called to ask about that Mirah song that I played, and said it was the greatest song she ever heard. In her entire life. And I didn't include it on the countdown (and yes, that version was released this year, on the same compilation as that Blow song that I put in the countdown). Whoops.

Anyway... At that Tullycraft show last summer, I talked to one of the members of Tullycraft (I forget which one... it wasn't Sean or Jenny, I know that), and he said that after he recorded Jenny's vocals for that song, he just kept listening to them over and over again. I don't know, there's just something mesmerizing about those "uh uh uh oh" vocals.

And today, I'm officially retiring "Matthew Modine" and "Abortion". I was going to play other songs by the respective artists in place of them, but I thought that would be lame. So, I just decided to pull out "Matthew Modine" one more time, as well as risk things with a censored version of "Abortion". I'm very sure that I covered my ass with the way I censored those songs, so no one had better lodge any complaints against them. But yeah, in this delicate political climate, I'm going to have to play it safe, so I'm not playing those songs over the air again.

To be honest, though, I'm not going to be that sad if I get kicked off the air. I don't know if this show is really going anywhere, or if people are heeding my unique take on the world of music. I think it would further the cause of twee more if I started my own band, got as big as Kiddo, and played shows with all the great twee bands whenever they come to Cleveland. That way, I could get people to come to see my band, and then stay for the Smittens or whatever other great band might be brave enough to come here.

Anyway, I need to go now, so here are the MP3s for today's show. By the way, the offer to restore the songs that went missing from last weeks MP3s due to that CD recorder malfunction is still on the table. If a couple more people say that they want it, I'll re-record those songs and post up a new MP3 here. Anyway, here's today's show:

data panik

Remember the pop group, Bis? Sure you do. You must have at least heard the end theme to the Powerpuff Girls.

Anyway, all three members of Bis (plus two other guys I've never heard of before) started a new band last year called "data Panik" (yes, that's a lowercase "d" and capital "P"). And I just downloaded all their songs.

I'm very happy with what I hear. I'm very happy to say that it's a step back for the three former leaders of the Bis Nation. And that's very good because most people didn't like the form into which Bis had evolved near the end of their career, which produced the somewhat boring and strictly electronic Return to Central. I'm very glad to see that they have now reembraced the genre-hopping and upbeat style which was what their fans appreciated them for in the first place. (And they actually started playing guitars again!)

While they've decided to stop calling themselves Bis and added two new members, it clearly sounds like they've de-evolved into their Social Dancing-era form. Even though they sound like their old selves, I do agree with the name change because it probably wouldn't work if they tried to go back to the youthful teen-c schtick of their early material with which the Bis name is most associated.

So far, they've released one 7" (UK-only) with two songs. If you don't want to go through the trouble of physically importing it, you can buy it as an MP3 download from the data Panik site. Each song costs .99p (that's in British pounds), which converts to about $1.70. Yes, that might be too much for one song, but it's cheaper than importing the actual 7" (which costs $10 with the shipping and handling). And besides, the former members of Bis deserve that money for actually going in the correct direction with their musical careers. Yay for data Panik! Boo for Return to Central!

Besides that, they have two demo songs that you can download for free (go to the "media" section of the site). If you like those, you have to get the songs from the 7".

And, in other news...

If you read the post below, you'll see that a weird malfunction occurred while I was recording my latest show, causing me to lose much of the second hour. I'm very unhappy about it because it was the first part of the big end-of-year countdown and I wanted to give everyone the opportunity to hear these great songs. So, here's the deal: I could recreate the missing part of the second hour and post the MP3 online here. All that I'd have to do is record the missing songs and add the robot voice announcing the position of each song on the countdown.

But I'm not going to do it unless I know that people want me to and will actually download it. So, if you want me to do it, post comments below requesting that I do it. If I get enough requests, I'll do it. So, don't hesitate. Just click on the comments link and post if you want to hear it. Okay? Okay.

:(

When I tried recording the second hour of the show today, the disc somehow got corrupted, and so I just haven't been able to retrieve any audio from it. Thanks to some stupid error that I can't explain, I'm missing songs 41 through 30 on the countdown. Fuck!

I do have the whole first hour of the show, and then songs 29 to 24, so you can hear those at least. I could reconstruct the missing portion of the second hour and upload it, but I'll only do that if people ask.

Anyway, happy new year!
